Katherine "Kitty" Line

(1913)

Kitty was the fourth child and only daughter of Thomas William and Susannah Line.  She was born at Fort George in Scotland. Before she was a year old the family was due to be posted to India but the outbreak of the First World War meant that the family remained in Scotland while her father was sent to serve in Turkey. Her early education took place at the Garrison school.  Beyond that little is known as, sadly, her family have refused to co-operate with the production of this website.

This photograph was probably taken a year or so after the end of hostilities in 1918, by which time the family had returned to live in London. It is understood Kitty continued her education at Mina Road School in Southwark. Unfortunately nothing is known about her working life or her years between the wars.

Kitty met William "Bill" Franklin shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. Unusually for the period he was seven years her junior.  He saw service with the Royal Navy and after the war became, like his brother-in-law Charles Edward Line , a manager with the Westminster (later National Westminster) Bank. He was an enthusiastic Rugby player but a knee injury sustained in the 1950s ended this amateur career. He went on to be an amateur Rugby referee.

The couple were married in 1943 in Streatham, South London. They were to have two children, Linda born in 1944 and Janet born in 1945.

This photograph of kitty was taken on the 60th wedding anniversary of her brother George Henry Line (left) and sister-in-law Amelia Ann Line (right) in 1997
